Europe must slash red tape, ensure safety, provide affordable homes, and open its door to new members, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said in her New Year’s message.
A Europe with affordable homes and quality jobs were foundations people could rely on, she said in a video message streamed on the European Broadcasting Service (EBS).
Moving forward into the new year, Metsola said that Europe must be “unapologetic” to “able to adapt and shape the new world we live in"
“A Europe that makes it easier for us all. A Europe that clears away the obstacles, that simplifies, supports and bursts bureaucratic bubbles,” she said.
In a time of war and geopolitical uncertainty, she said that Europe must remain a safe place to live, which takes responsibility for its own security. “A Europe that people can rely on that guarantees peace of mind,” she added.
As EU accession talks are progressing with countries like Ukraine and Moldova, Metsola called for a Europe that “opens its doors... that builds solid partnerships with allies across the globe.
A Eurobarometer poll revealed that Maltese people are most likely to believe their country would benefit from a larger EU.
This was Metsola’s fourth New Year’s message since she was elected in 2022. Her second term as EP president ends in 2027. However, a few months ago, Brussels-based news website Euractiv reported that Metsola is eyeing a third term as EP president.
